Refresh Yourself This Spring

By Donna Stark

The official start date of spring has come and gone and many people have taken that as a cue to clean their homes, cars, and offices. It always feels good to purge, to refresh, and then to start clean. And while that is all well and good, it’s also important to remember to take some extra time to refresh your health and well-being as well. It may not be high on your priority list, but your physical and mental health are far more important than that closet you are cleaning out. So expend your energy on what really matters and focus a little bit of time on yourself.

Refreshing Your Physical Health

Here are a couple of ideas on how to refresh your behavior in regards to your physical health.

  • Proactive care - Try to instill new behaviors when it comes to your healthcare and be intentional about taking a proactive approach. Are you the type of person who only sees the doctor when something is wrong, when you are sick and feeling miserable? Wouldn’t it be much better to avoid that whole reactive routine altogether and see a doctor proactively to maintain your overall wellness?
  • Commit to eating clean - A commitment to eating clean will definitely influence your health for the better. This means little to no processed and packaged foods and getting back to the basics with your diet (if your great-grandmother wouldn’t know what it is that you are eating, then perhaps you should rethink your choice). Eating clean is all about nourishing your body and fueling it with nutritious, wholesome foods.

Refreshing Your Mental Health

And just as important as your physical health is, here are a couple suggestions to refresh your mental health as well.

  • Head outdoors more - There have been many studies that have shown the incredible benefits the great outdoors can have on our physical health and also on our mental and emotional health. So look for ways that you can spend more time under the sun. Visit parks, learn to garden, or take up a sport ... the list could go on and on.
  • Give your home an up-do - You’ve been cooped up all winter. It’s time for a change and to make things new again, don’t just spring clean … spring refresh! Paint some walls, rearrange your furniture, or buy some new décor. One easy change that can make a huge difference is to fill your home with new plants and flowers.

Paying attention to the state of your physical and mental health is just as important as paying attention to the cleanliness of your home or office. Whether it’s signing up for a different fitness class, finding a new doctor, taking an evening walk after dinner, or buying new pillows for your sofa, make it a priority to spend time on yourself and on what you like.
