Healthy Eating While Traveling

By Donna Stark

There are a certain amount of givens when you leave your home for vacation. It’s a given that you will probably forget to pack the most important thing, like your passport or medications. It’s a given that you won’t catch a wink of sleep on that overnight flight, even though getting a jump on sleep is the reason you booked it. It’s also a given that you will spend much more than what your budget allows, and more than likely, you will end up paying for the trip well into the next year. Ugh … those gift shops will get you every time!

But although there are so many givens that always seem to pop up during the worst times on your vacation, many of them can be avoided. Take healthy eating for example. You know you aren’t going to stick to your diet and will probably be eating out of plastic wrappers until you get to your destination, right? So why don’t you plan ahead and erase this given right out of your vacation memories?

Simple Hacks for Healthy Eating

There are many tricks to help you avoid the trap of eating unhealthy food while traveling. Let’s take a look at a few.

  • Avoid junk - Try to avoid those triple-decker burgers and fried chicken and choose healthy sandwiches, wraps, or salads. Skip the chips and fries and ask for a piece of fruit or yogurt. And last of all, stay away from sodas and energy drinks and choose natural juices or water instead!
  • Stick with produce - You’ve been told over and over again to “eat the rainbow,” but that doesn’t mean to choose neon-colored candy! So leave those bags of licorice and gummy bears at home and pack some fresh fruit and veggies in their place.
  • Arrive early - OK, this may be asking a lot if you are the type of person that prefers to arrive at the gate with seconds to spare, but it may be worth some consideration. By arriving early, not only will you avoid having your name called over the intercom because the pilot is waiting on you, but you can also skip eating your dinner out of a vending machine. More time at the airport means more time to enjoy a healthier meal.
  • Do your research - As your departure date comes near, start doing some research. You already know your airline, so find out what restaurants are located in its terminal as well. Then look up their menus and compare the selections they have to offer. By doing this, you will be sure to find exactly what you want in terms of healthy meal selections and nutritional content.

Be Prepared

Traveling can oftentimes get the best of us and it’s usually another given that we come home and exclaim “I need a vacation from my vacation!” Well, not next time, because for your next trip, you are going to stay healthy while traveling and will be prepared for everything … except for the sticker shock at those gift shops. Nothing will ever prepare you for that.
