Choosing Exercise: Workouts for Every Preference

By Genevieve Cunningham

Exercise is important for every person. We’re taught as young children -- PE, anyone? -- that movement is something that we should do every day. As we get older, we often make exercise complicated. Why? Because it becomes more work than play. But what if there was a way to actually like exercise again? As it turns out, there may be! If you want to enjoy exercise again, take a look at these workouts that are suited to every preference.

For Low-Impact Lovers

  • Walking - Walking is low-impact and can be easily adapted to fit individual needs. You can walk slowly or quickly. You can walk on flat ground or uphill. If you like something fairly low-key, walking is a great exercise that you can do now and long into the future.

  • Swimming - Swimming can really be challenging. But for those who need something that is easy in the body, swimming is a great choice. The water eases any stress or pain felt on the body, and this makes the exercise more enjoyable. Find a pool, take a dip, and enjoy.

For Fans of Intensity

  • HIIT - HIIT is short for high intensity interval training, and it’s tough! Those who love a big challenge will likely love these tough intervals that are followed by a very short rest. This workout is meant to get your heart rate up quickly, get your body sweating, and burn massive calories in a short time frame.

  • Crossfit - This workout is popular, a little expensive, and incredibly hard. Crossfit uses weights, cardio, and strength training to get you super fit. You’ll have a team, a coach, and you’ll be pushed further than you thought you could possibly go. Does it work? Yes! But it’ll only suit those who are looking for serious intensity in their workout.

For Traditionalists

  • Running - Running is an old classic. You can sprint, jog, or find a pace between the two. All you need is some open ground and some shoes. Running makes you sweat, works every muscle in the body, and can help you lose weight. And once you make it to the famous runner’s high, it’s fun! If you like something a bit more traditional, this is it.

  • Aerobics - Aerobics is an exercise that is both classic and effective. It’ll work the muscles, get your heart pumping, and it can be a lot of fun. The music is fast and loud, the class usually has a fun atmosphere, and it’s still challenging. Find a gym and check out the many aerobic classes they offer.

If you’re serious about getting fit, then do a little research. There is a workout for everyone! Figure out what you enjoy, find a workout that suits your interests, and dive in. When you find something to love, staying fit and keeping your body healthy will be easier and more enjoyable than ever before.
