Preventing Neck Pain While Staying Home
By Stepy Kamei
As the vast majority of us learn to adjust to a new normal by staying at home, we may find ourselves settling into some new hobbies -- or leaning more into existing ones. It can be very chaotic trying to settle into a new routine. This unfortunately means it can be easy to fall into negative habits and patterns which may bring harm to your overall well-being. Whether you're working from home or getting into some new or old hobbies, it's important to make sure you're continuing to support your spine and joints. In addition to seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis, keep on reading here to learn how to prevent neck and back pain while staying home.
Setting Up a Safe Home Office
If you've been able to move to a work-from-home setup, you may be realizing just how important it is to have an ergonomically-designed work station. You'll more than likely be spending long hours in front of devices such as a laptop, computer, or phone. Therefore, you'll want to make sure your posture in front of these devices doesn't contribute to poor neck and upper spine health.
Make sure you are seated eye-level with your screens. This will prevent you from craning your head forward and down, which places a lot of pressure on the neck and often leads to pain and soreness.
It's also helpful to get up and take frequent breaks from working. At least once an hour, be sure to stand up, walk around, and stretch your body in order to keep blood circulating throughout your body.
Staying Pain-Free at Home
Even if you're simply lounging about or engaging in some stress-relieving hobbies, you'll want to make sure your posture isn't contributing to neck pain. Make sure you're not sitting still in one position for too long. Try to incorporate physical activity as often as possible throughout your day -- this can include doing yoga, going for a walk outside, or even just stretching a few times a day.
