When a Herniated Disc Strikes You
By Stephen R. Farris
Sometimes we experience back pain so severe, it literally makes us less flexible than we're accustomed to feeling. It may originate in the lower back region or in the middle and up to the neck region.
It could be the result of a herniated disc. Your spine has 23 discs in it, which are the spacers between the 24 vertebrae in an adult spine. They also serve as shock absorbers and keep the vertebrae from crunching together when we walk, run or jump.
When any of these discs gets out of alignment or ruptures, it can cause us pain to the point where we limit our activities and, most often, lose time on the job. So what are some of the signs that you may be suffering from a herniated -- or bulging -- disc? Let's take a quick look.
- You feel pain in the glutes, down your thigh and into your calf on one side
- Pain may be in both sides, down into each leg
- Weakness, numbness or tingling in legs and feet
- Changes in your bladder and/or bowels
- Difficulty finding comfort in lying down
- Difficulty in standing up straight
- Weakness, numbness or tingling in each arm or just one
If you're experiencing back pain and start feeling any of the above conditions, visit with your local chiropractor, such as those found at The Joint Chiropractic, at any one of their nearly 500 locations across the nation.

Through spinal manipulation, they can realign the vertebrae that is out-of-place and help reduce the pressure on nerve endings, so that you can begin to feel less pain and start the healing process.
Your Joint chiropractor will also suggest exercises that you can do at home in between treatment sessions that will aid in the healing quicker, so that you can return to a normal, healthy and active lifestyle that you're accustomed to living.
And if you have questions concerning your overall health, they may have those answers or offer tips in that area as well. No appointment is necessary, so check them out today.
