Nature and Good Health: How They're Connected

By Genevieve Cunningham

It's no secret that as a society, we're totally killing our planet. While we may or may not see the ramifications of this in our lifetime, it's very unfortunate that we treat nature so poorly. Getting in nature can bring big benefits into our lives. And the harsh truth is that most of us don't get nearly enough time outdoors. But why does it really matter? If you're interested in learning how getting yourself in nature can drastically improve your health, take a look at how nature and good health are connected in our lives.

Nature Fights Anxiety

We are an incredibly anxious nation. The number of people who are dependent on anxiety-reducing medication has skyrocketed over the past few years. We're nervous. We're stressed. We're anxious. And this anxiety is truly harming our overall health. While some people really do need medication to help reduce their anxiety, many of us would benefit from simply getting outside every day. Nature has a way of calming the mind and the body at the same time. It helps remove stress and makes us feel more in the moment. If you suffer from anxiety of any kind, try getting outside a little bit more every day to reduce this frustrating feeling in your life.

Nature Encourages a Slower Pace

Most of us are rushing around every moment of the day. We have a million things to do, and we never have enough time to get it all done. And for some reason, we think this is normal. But if you get outside and spend some time in nature, you'll quickly see that the natural state of things is much slower. Those who spend regular amounts of time outside tend to live a slightly slower paced life. And this is truly a good thing for both physical and mental well-being. If you're guilty of rushing around and keeping a New York minute pace, get outside to slow it down and enjoy the life that you have.

Nature Brings Sunshine and Fresh Air

As for the actual physical aspects of nature, getting outside allows you to breathe in fresh air and soak in some very important Vitamin D. Both of these are essential for keeping our bodies healthy. Fresh air helps to expand our lung function and brings oxygen into our bodies. Vitamin D helps to strengthen the bones and improve our moods on a daily basis. If physical health is what you're after, it can truly be beneficial to get more time out of your house and in nature instead.

Nature is such an important part of our lives. If you're not appreciating it and spending time in it, then you need to start now. With more time outside and an appreciation for all that nature offers, you may be able to improve your physical and mental health for years to come.
