Sleep Well This Summer With These Tips

By Brandi Goodman

Summer sleep can be difficult to achieve. It's hard to drift off at night when you're feeling sweaty and uncomfortable. With some tips in mind, however, you can find a way to sleep well this summer and get the rest your mind and body require.

Create a Makeshift AC

Not everyone has the luxury of having an air conditioner. But as long as you have a cheap fan, you can still make do. Create a makeshift AC by placing a tray of ice cubes in front of your fan. It will allow a cool breeze to flow toward you rather than a warm one.

Spritz Your Sheet

First, don't use a thick comforter, fleece blanket, or anything else warm. A sheet will suffice when you're trying to sleep in a hot room. You can make the option even more worthwhile by spritzing the sheet with a bit of water. You don't have to soak it. Just a quick spray to get the sheet slightly damp will do the job to keep you cool at night. You may need to reapply after a while if you're still struggling to get any shut-eye.

Apply Cooling Aloe

Sunburned skin won't make it easy to sleep. You can apply a cooling aloe to help soothe the redness and make it easier to drift off. Even if you have no sunburn, it doesn't hurt to apply. It can offer some cooling relief and keep your skin moisturized.

Pick a Different Sleeping Place

If you're able to, try and pick somewhere different to sleep for a night (or several). Rooms upstairs and those facing the sunniest part of the home are not going to be easy to sleep in. They'll get overheated easily. Bring a mattress to the living room or basement if you have one and get some rest there instead. You could even set up a hammock if you have one for better breathability and airflow if your mattress feels too hot to sleep on.

Shower in Cool Water

Avoid hot showers before bed. Instead, jump into some cool water to help reduce your body temperature. Cool water on your head can help to keep your entire body feeling cool and make it easier to achieve sleep. You don't even need to worry about washing up. Just a couple of minutes to get your hair wet is all you need.

Sleep is necessary for good health. When you're finding it difficult to get the Zzz's you need in the summer, give these tips a try. Keeping yourself and your room as cool as possible will help.
