Spring Into Summer With Healthy Behaviors
By Donna Stark
From the end-of-year school events to yard work and gardening to crazy weekend adventures to some much-needed rest and relaxation, the month of May can be an extremely busy time of year for many of us. And that's OK. Just make sure you leave yourself enough room to think about and prioritize the health of your spine. Why? Well, let's just say your spine is key to optimal health and wellness. Take a look at some helpful spine-friendly tips that your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic recommend.
Try to Walk More
If you are finding it hard to fit your workouts in during these busy weeks, why don't you just try to add more steps into your days? Take advantage of the great weather and set a goal to walk more. Walking at least 30 minutes a day can help you maintain good health, improve your posture, and reduce stress, but the best part is how easy it is to add those steps to your days. You can walk during lunch, choose a different parking spot, or take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Keep Your Eyes Up
School concerts, plays, and proms ... there are a lot of events going on during this time of year and everyone is busy posting pictures and videos of their children online. Social media is a great way to stay connected, but it can also be the eye of the storm when it comes to neck and back pain, so try to minimize the amount of time you are looking down at your phone. The extra strain being placed on your spine from doing so can lead to a ton of pain issues down the road.
Lift Correctly
Spring is a great time to start those home renovation projects but it's also the time when many people find themselves on the couch with a sore back. If you want to stay on track with the timeline you created, you have to stay off of that couch, and the best way to do that is to make sure you are lifting correctly. Bend at the knees, engage your leg and core muscles, and make sure you are carrying heavy items as close to your body as you can. If you have the equipment, use a dolly or wheelbarrow to help!
