5 Ways to Boost Your Sleep Now

By Genevieve Cunningham

It doesn't really matter who you are or what stage of life you're currently in. The chances that you're getting enough sleep on a regular basis are extremely slim. Adults everywhere are walking around like high functioning zombies. We pump ourselves full of caffeine and hope for the best. But while this technique technically keeps us going, it's definitely not best for our health. If you want to live the healthiest life possible, take a look at these tips for getting better sleep starting tonight.

Eliminate Light

Turning off the overhead light is a good start, but it may not be enough. The light from the TV, computers, phones, and even alarm clocks can keep you awake. This is especially true of blue light -- which emanates from various technology.  If you want better sleep, make your room as dark as possible.

Turn Down the Temp

If your environment is too hot, you're going to have a hard time sleeping. Our bodies like the temperature to be turned down a bit. Turn your thermostat down, snuggle down under the covers, and you'll sleep like a baby.

Drink Sleepy Tea

Sleepy time tea is made to lull us to sleep. It's the entire purpose! The warmth, the ingredients, the soothing habit. It's enough to make your eyelids droopy. If you have a hard time falling asleep, put this tea into your nighttime routine and let it work its magic.

Stretch

A good stretch helps loosen tight spots in the body and reduces stress. You may not even realize that your body is tense until you start stretching. As you work out the tension, your entire body and mind will relax and sleep will be easier to find.

Unplug

An hour or so before bedtime, unplug from technology -- especially texting and social media. These outlets keep our minds moving and our senses heightened. Unplugging gives you time to decompress. It'll take some getting used to, but this one little habit will be well worth it.

It might seem impossible, but getting more sleep is a matter of priority and habit. If you want better sleep, you have to make changes and stick with them. Use these tips to get started, and enjoy better sleep in no time at all.
