Keeping Relationships Working in Harmony
By Stephen R. Farris
Every now and then, relationships can begin to feel strained. It could be work related, home related, stress from kids, or life in general. Whatever the case may be, couples -- in order to stay together -- have to come to some sort of compromise, and that can be difficult at times.
Most couples resort to counseling with a therapist, but time doesn't always allow for this to take place. However, there's really no need to fret. There are several ways couples can help their relationship at home. All that's required is setting aside just a little time between the two of you.
For starters, try sitting down together and telling each other how you feel. Do so in a manner as to not placing blame on your partner. Use "I" instead of "You" when it comes to your feelings or mood. This technique can be an icebreaker in relationship health, and actually bring to two of you a little closer together. There are many techniques the both of you can try, so let's take a look at a few more.
Vision Board
Maybe you and your partner both have goals you each want to achieve together. Make a vision board with those goals and when things begin to get a little tough, sit down together and revisit those goals. It could help resolve whatever conflicts might be going on between the two of you.
Conversation
Conversation seems to be somewhat of a lost art. It's much easier to text our words these days than it is to actually sit and converse with someone in person. So instead of texting, schedule time after work and chores are done, and the kids are tucked away in bed, to sit and talk with each other. It could be anything. Maybe choose a subject both of you are familiar with, such as history, music, current affairs, etc.
Express Yourself
What I mean by expressing yourself is to let your partner know how much you appreciate them each and every day. That literally means telling them that they are appreciated each and every day. It could be a good morning text, verbally before you both head into your day, something they did like picking the kids up from school, fixing dinner, or for simply being the person they are. It doesn't take much for a little praise to go a long way.
