3 Reasons Why Your Body Needs a Good Stretch

By Genevieve Cunningham

It seems as if there is a growing number of people who skip the stretch. Before a workout, after a workout, when they’re feeling stiff … they look to almost anything except for engaging the body in a deep stretch. Why? Isn’t stretching good for you? Or is it overrated? Actually, stretching is a great way to care for your body, and chances are good that your body really needs it! If you’re among those who don’t take stretching seriously, take a look at these reasons to stretch it out today.

To Work Out Stiffness and Pain

Pain and stiffness in the body happen. Whether it happens after a workout, because of an injury, or for seemingly no reason at all, there’s nothing we want more than to get rid of it. Stretching can help work out these kinds of discomforts, especially if they reside in the muscles or ligaments. If you want to keep this kind of pain away, try to stretch every morning when you wake up and every night before bed. Even a small amount of stretching can help lessen or reduce these pains over time.

To Loosen the Muscles and Deepen Flexibility

You don’t realize how important flexibility is until you begin to lose it. While it’s normal to lose a bit of natural flexibility as you age, it can certainly help to engage the body with a regular stretch. Improving flexibility makes various tasks easier. Walking, exercise, lifting … the more flexible, the better. If you would like to bend or twist again without pain, stretching should definitely be a part of your normal routine.

To Call for More Oxygen

Stretching, especially before a workout, helps get more oxygen to your muscles. When you exercise, more oxygen is necessary. Your body needs it in order to function at its best and keep your workout going. Stretching warms up the body and begins the blood pumping process. Doing a little stretching before your workout routine might help get your muscles ready and prevent injury, too.

If you’re not already doing your fair share of stretching, it’s absolutely time to start. It can only bring good into your health and life, and there are absolutely zero reasons to leave it out of your routine. Start slowly, so as not to injure your body or burn yourself out. Build your routine over time, and before you know it, you’ll be more flexible, more mobile, and healthier than ever before.
