Keeping Up With Your Outdoor Workouts

By Donna Stark

Is the winter weather trying to keep your fitness routine indoors? Have all your friends traded their outdoor runs for an indoor hot yoga class? It may seem like Old Man Winter, and maybe even your friends, are telling you to stay inside, but for some reason, you don't want to listen, do you? There is nothing like an outdoor workout and there really is no reason to stop. But before you do head out, take a look at the following winter exercise tips from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.

Pick the Right Footwear

Your feet are one of the first body parts to get cold, so make sure you choose the right socks to keep them warm and protected. Socks made from merino wool are a great choice because they help wick moisture away from your skin while simultaneously insulating you against the chilled air. You should also pick socks that cover your ankle for extra warmth if it is exposed.

As for your shoes, make sure the ones you choose have solid support and great traction. You don't want to be slipping and sliding all over the roads. You may also want to consider shoelace-free shoes as well. Have you ever tried to tie your laces when they were wet and covered in slush or snow?

Warm Up Inside

You already know why it is important to warm up before you work out, but did you know that when the temperatures drop, you should warm up before you step outside? Warming up indoors will help raise your body temperature before the cold air envelopes you, and that will make your workout a lot easier on your body. There will be less risk for strains and other injuries.

Stop to Stay Warm

If the weather is particularly frightful outside, make sure there are some warm spots you can stop at along the route. These spots could be a grocery store, gas station, or coffee shop. The point behind doing this is to protect yourself in case your body becomes too cold. It's also a good idea to keep the route you follow close to home. You certainly don't want to run or bike a long distance only to have your body shut down because of the weather.

Keeping Up With Your Outdoor Workouts

Unless the conditions outside are completely unsafe, there is no reason why you need to stay indoors. Just make sure you are picking the right footwear, warming up before you head outdoors, and setting a safe course for you to work out in. Doing those things will make all the difference in the world.
