Foods That Can Give an Extra Kick of Energy

By Genevieve Cunningham

When we’re little, it seems as though we have more energy than we know what to do with. We run and run and run … and only at the very end of the day to we crash. As adults, we still have the urge to go, go, go, but we often have far less energy in the tank. This leads to quite a few exhausted adults. If you feel as though you could use just a little more energy every day, but you don’t want to turn to caffeine, take a look at these foods to help you feel more alive.

Fresh Fruit

Eating fresh fruit is like getting a blast of sugar -- except this sugar is all natural! While some people are against any sugar at all, most doctors and researchers agree that fruit is acceptable and even healthy in moderation. If you need an afternoon pick me up, just choose your favorite fruit and make it a snack. Strawberry, watermelon, blueberries, and apple. Use this as a healthy and delicious way to gain more energy with few calories and a blast of nutrients.

Nuts might seem like an odd choice, but it’s the blast of protein that can make them a good choice for energy. Protein often gives your body a quick boost in focus and energy. If you need a natural way to gain some energy to make it through the day, make a handful of nuts your after lunch snack. If you’re OK with the calories, peanuts might be a good option. If you’re interested in keeping the calories low and the nutrients high, you may opt for walnuts or almonds. Just be sure to measure well, as the calories and fat in nuts can add up quickly if you’re not careful.

A well hydrated body has far more energy than one that is dehydrated. Drinking more water almost always gives you a bit more energy and definitely more concentration. Some people who are water fanatics even claim that a cold cup of water is better than coffee in the mornings for waking you up and getting you moving. If you’re feeling sluggish, reach for the water bottle first for a zero calorie way to boost your energy.

We live in a busy world. We have far too much to do and not enough time to do it. Of course we’re all exhausted all of the time! But living in a state of exhaustion just isn’t worth it. Use these foods to give you a quick pick me up and help you make it through the day with energy left over.
