Manage the Cold for Exercising in It
By Tom Herrin
If you are committed to an exercise program, you usually don't want to let anything interfere with your participation. Most of us know all too well just what the result is when we get sidetracked. It may mean a loss of motivation and discouragement. When this happens, it can be pretty difficult to get back to the same level of enthusiasm. Most of us have experienced that. In riding my bicycle, I once made a decision that I would ride every day possible as long as the temperature was above 30 degrees. Keeping that commitment was tough as it was difficult to find a way to dress accordingly. I would either be too cold at the start or too hot as soon as I got a mile down the road. I discovered that dressing in layers were the real deal in making it work.
Start With a Good Base
Many people suggest a base layer that is tight-fitting and lightweight. It should wick away moisture and provide good airflow as well. The older style of wearing sweats to ride are pretty obsolete as they would get wet and stay that way. These newer materials can work well and allow you to have the kind of freedom you need as you begin to perspire while you heat up. Staying dry is much more comfortable.
The Middle Should Insulate
Insulation is a great way to hold heat or cold in or out. It usually has some kind of air spaces that trap to and prevent rapid heating or cooling. A bulky but lightweight material is preferred. Some of the older materials such as wool, fleece, or down all do a pretty good job. Several newer materials have been developed giving us more options. This layer will also need to allow moisture and air to move through.
Toughness Is Required in the Outer Layer
The outer layer does a little more than the others. It should be tough enough to resist rain and wind. It should also protect from abrasive objects and scrapes. If this layer has some parts that are removable, it will be easier to maintain an optimal temperature as you exercise. Convenience can be a big help. When it comes to keeping the right level of motivation, layers may be a great way to keep yourself on task.
