Carbs May Be a Friend of the Body

By Tom Herrin

There are many different kinds of approaches to good health.  Diet is always one of the most critical parts of the puzzle.  For those who want to have the best health possible, it is vitally important for people to know what goes into their bodies and how it works.  Making drastic cuts can be good, at times, but it can also lead to disastrous results.  One of the trends today has been to severely cut carbs.  While there is certainly merit to this notion, carbs still play a significant role in health and the way the body works.  Making a blanket effort to cut carbs may lead to health problems as bad as taking in too many.

Be Aware of What Is Bad

When people look for ways to cut carbs, it is best if they can identify which ones should bear watching.  Those that come from sugar are known to be possible issues.  With the amount of products available that contain high amounts of sugar, it may be a challenge for many to purchase something that can provide a good snack or meal without being bad for health.  Some recommendations are for women to avoid consuming more than 100 calories per day from carbs from sugar and for men to keep their consumption to 150 calories per day.

Include More Good Carbs

Carbs play an important role in health.  They are necessary for the body to do what it needs to do.  They are the primary source of fuel for the body.  They keep the muscles working and in good order.  When people are too low on their supply of carbs, the body may begin to use muscle as a means of providing fuel.  This can result in loss of lean muscle mass.  Those good carbs are easy to get.  They come from fruits, vegetables, and healthy grains.  What many moms told their kids years ago still holds true.

We Can Make Health a Reality

When we set out to do the most for our health, we have to consider all possibilities.  What we eat can play an important part in that.  I try to be aware of what I need and know it is not the same for everyone, though the basics don't change.  We each need to be as educated as possible about our own needs and take action accordingly.
