Keeping up with Your Kids Through Chiropractic Care

By Donna Stark

I know that, as parents, we love to encourage and see our kids physically active, especially now during the times that we live which are filled with couches, video games, and Netflix. I think it makes us happy not only for the health reasons but also because it reminds many of us about our own childhood, where there wasn’t a day that went by without being outside and playing until the street lights came on. But doesn’t it seem like there is so much that goes into getting our children moving, now that we are older? Forget about the carpools to sports practices or the costs for the trampoline centers, I’m talking about us, the parents, and the physical capabilities that are needed just in order to “hang” with our kids. From good spinal health to being fit enough to play a game of tag, there are some things that are key to hanging with our children.

It’s Cool to be Healthy

We all know how much dedication and commitment it takes to be a parent … emotionally, mentally, financially, and for many of us, physically. So whether it’s a bike ride around the neighborhood, a pickup game of basketball, or a quick game of freeze tag, your health is a huge factor in how cool your kids perceive you to be. Here are some tips on how you can maintain it.

  • Healthy diet - How you cook and what you eat can make a big difference in your health and will give you more than enough energy to keep up with your kids. So eat whole foods, add fruits and veggies to your diet, avoid processed foods and refined sugar, limit your sodium intake, cook your own meals, and drink water. Lots of it.
  • Exercise - You don’t need to spend hours at the gym each day but you do need to get your body moving as much as possible throughout the week. In addition to improving your overall health and reducing the risk of developing heart disease, daily exercise will keep you fit enough to join in on the activities of your children.
  • Adequate sleep - Getting too few hours of sleep does more than making the day drag on and keeping you yawning. It can weaken your immune system, increase your chances of developing health issues, and cause mood swings … and nobody likes to play with a worn-out, grumpy parent.
  • Chiropractic care - Seeing your chiropractor regularly will help to improve your immune system, range of motion, balance, and coordination. It will help your body function at an optimal level and, in turn, will improve your overall chance of making it through a game of Capture the Flag with your teens.
