Why You Should Make Time for Relaxation
By Genevieve Cunningham
Even though we often don't treat it this way, rest is an incredibly important part part of life. We need rest, and we need it often. While sleep is also good, rest is different from quality sleep. Rest includes relaxing and letting go of stressors on purpose. If you're not getting enough rest and relaxation, it's definitely time to start. But why? If you're ready to make time for rest in your life, take a look at these reasons why it's so important.
Because It Feels Good
Sometimes it's OK to do things just because it feels good. And rest definitely feels good. Any time that we’re able to engage in something that we really enjoy, it lowers stress and makes us feel better about life. Regardless of health, feeling good about what we're doing matters, and rest and relaxation can make you feel happy from now until the rest of your life.
Because It Improves Your Health
Even though we appreciate that relaxation feels good, it’s also beneficial to our overall health. Relaxing allows the stress to melt away, which then lowers blood pressure, reduces aches and pains, and may reduce the frequency and severity of headaches. Relaxing may also encourage brain function, strengthen the immune system, ease digestion, and bring other benefits to the body and mind. If you want an incredibly easy way to improve your health, just take a day off and relax.
Because It’s Good for the Mind
When we’re too stressed, the mind begins to function poorly. And many of us start to notice the decline fairly quickly. We start to forget things, have trouble concentrating, and may suffer from an incredibly short attention span. We may also feel irritable or moody, which wreaks havoc on our mental and emotional health. Making time to relax helps avoid these pesky problems and encourages healthy brain function every day.
Relaxing is more important than most of us realize. It needs to be a part of our lives, preferably every day. Even if it's only a few minutes per day, relaxing should be just as important as everything else in our lives. Do what you can to make some rest and relaxation time available in your life, and you may experience better health from here on out.
