Working With Your Hands Can Provide Fulfillment

By Tom Herrin

Just about everyone who works finds themselves in over their heads at one time or another.  It is pretty easy to do.  There seems to be so many demands on people.  The busier they are, the more demands that seem to pile on.  There often comes a time when people think that they are on the brink of personal disaster.  It is not necessarily that it is all bad but just busy to the point of being almost overwhelmed.  Changing directions can be what it takes to gain a fresh outlook.  In the times of many grandparents or great-grandparents, people found themselves involved in something such as knitting or doing some kind of woodworking.  I can even remember shelling peas or cracking pecans to be put away for later.  These had a way of taking my mind off of everything else.

Working With The Hands Can Act As A Therapy

When people use their hands to create something, it is called crafting.  We all know of craftsmen as people who made detailed things by hand.  Most people marvel at the workmanship exhibited.  Many people use great detail to carry out their chosen project.  As they do this, their many other worries and stresses of life may seem to disappear for a while.  It can block out those things that many become an unpleasant burden on the mind.  There is also that good feeling of accomplishment when someone enjoys the finished product

It May Improve Social Interactions

When people become involved in some form of crafting, they may find that there are others who appreciate the same activity.  Sharing with, and learning from, others can build relationships and  mutual respect.  Even if others participate in other kinds of crafting activities, trading the products of those talents can bring about the reward for making something that may benefit someone else.

It Doesn’t Have To Be Something Passed Down From Ancestors

You may be a first generation to find a given craft to enjoy.  All it takes is doing a little looking around.  Spending some time viewing what others have made can provide ideas as well as inspiration.  A trip to a craft store may be an eye opener.  Whether it is painting, making jewelry, working with leather, or any other thing, you may see something that you never actually gave a thought to.  Take a little time and see for yourself what a world there is out there in crafting.  It may provide the peace of mind that fights off depression and makes you feel good all over.
