Berries Can Improve the Healthiness of a Diet

By Tom Herrin

Even those of us who claim otherwise are usually interested in ways to improve our diets.  In these busy times, in which so many people are in a hurry and feel they have to eat on the run, many of the food choices leave something to be desired.  There are those fast foods that are somewhat healthy, but when people rely on them almost exclusively, the ill-effects will add up fast.  Adding some healthy foods can enhance a diet with a few adjustments.  In recent years, berries have gotten a lot of attention as one of the healthy options.

They Are Packed With Antioxidants

Quite a bit of attention has been given in recent times about the significance of antioxidants.  They seem to help fight disease in many cases.  They also help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.  Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries have the most antioxidants among the berries.  Antioxidants are believed to prevent or limit some cancers as well.  In many cases, they help reduce inflammation.

They May Help With Sugar Problems

It seems that berries have some ability to help manage blood sugar in the body.  In some cases, it appears that the level of blood sugar is reduced.  In others, the body’s sensitivity to insulin may be keener.  In still others, insulin response to high carb meals is much better.  These benefits seem to occur in both people with insulin problems and those with normal functions.  With the abundance of instances in which diabetes is occurring today, this is pretty significant.

There Are Plenty of Ways to Eat Them

I really enjoy berry cobblers.  They may be my favorite of all that type of dessert.  Berries are great at breakfast, either alone, with milk, or with cereals.  They can add a special flavor to all kinds of other foods.  They seem to find a home in salads and some pastries.  They are also quite popular in smoothies.  We often have them with yogurt.  If you want to liven up your menu and have healthy foods at the same time, try adding some berries.  You and your family will likely create some recipes of you own with just a little experimentation.  Try a different kind every week, and see the results.  Whether fresh, frozen, or cooked, you are sure to enjoy them.
