Playing Your Favorite Instrument May Improve Health
By Tom Herrin
For those who were in the band in school while others were involved in athletics, they were often made to feel as if they were not great physical specimens. Some of this is because the general concept is that those in band, or some other fine arts pursuit, do not get any kind of physical activity. Those who do subscribe to that notion don’t know much about marching band, but there is actually more to it than simply that. Actually playing some instruments can do much for health while accomplishing many of the other things they choose to pursue. Playing an instrument, such as brass or woodwind, can do a few other good things for health.
It May Build Better Breathing Habits
When people play musical instruments that require wind to make their sound, they must be able to manage their breathing. Those horns that make a low sound require full lung capacity to make their sound. Those that make high sounds use a large amount of lung capacity and greater force. Either one will contribute to more efficient breathing. It appears that sometimes even people with asthma see improvement in the condition by playing these instruments.
It May Improve Hand-Eye Coordination
For anyone who has observed people play a horn, it is pretty obvious that they will need to be able to use their fingers effectively in order to make different sounds. Since they are usually either looking at their director or leader or their music, they will develop a keen ability to read or observe directions while playing. Their fingers will need to be quite nimble. They often use their tongue uniquely as well.
It May Help Build Personal Confidence
For many people, it is very difficult to speak or do anything in front of people. Their nerves or fears may make them almost incapable of doing anything. This can be almost debilitating to some individuals. Participating as part of a group can be a good way of gradually experiencing the feeling of performing in front of others. This may grow into solo performances. Many people may have the opportunity to build greater confidence by diligent practice. It can provide a sense of greater calm and relief from the stress of being on the spot. If you didn’t think so much of those who chose to play, think again. They may be doing a lot for their health. You may want to consider it yourself.
