Soft Fruits May Be Really Healthy

By Tom Herrin

Though lots of people recognize their need to eat more fruit, many struggle with doing it.  For some, they have difficulty with the more citrus type fruits.  For others, they have problems biting into something as crisp as an apple.  For people in either of these categories, pears are a great option.  They don't have the citrus taste of so many fruits such as oranges or grapefruits.  They are much softer than apples.  Many times, pears are very soft, so much so that they can be indented with the fingers.  As for their health benefits, they are second to none and are a simple and inexpensive way to improve health.

They May Help with Weight Loss

Pears are a good food to eat for those who are trying to manage their weight.  It can satisfy that sweet tooth.  They have a high water content and lots of good fiber.  This means that people will feel full for a longer period.  Pears are also a very low-calorie fruit.  An average pear contains only around 100 calories.  According to one study, pears may provide the greatest amount of success as a low-calorie fruit.

They May Help Prevent Birth Defects

In recent years, people are prescribed prenatal vitamins as a matter of practice for women who are expecting.  They are given to help to prevent birth defects.  The main substance is folic acid.  It has been found to be highly effective.  Pears contain a healthy amount of folic acid.  Their consumption is considered to be a great way of helping to be sure that a sufficient amount of folic acid is taken in to the body.

They Are a Simple Food

Pears are good in raw form.  They are easy to pick up and carry wherever you want, so they make a good snack or dessert.  As a child, I ate them often either right out a can or with cottage cheese.  Some people eat them with a slice of cheese over them.  They are good as part of a fruit salad.  They are good when cooked into a cobbler.  I enjoy them when they are made into pear preserves.  If you haven't eaten them lately, pick up some pears and find your favorite way to eat them.  Have them as often as you like.  They are only likely to make your health better.
