3 Healthy Tips for Losing Weight Post Baby

By Genevieve Cunningham

As a mom, I personally understand just how hard it really is to lose that post-baby weight. It’s frustrating and difficult and sometimes overwhelming. It’s not fun at all. And to add fuel to the fire, there is a new little person hanging around demanding every single ounce of your time and energy. If you are in this position right now, don’t give up hope. Losing baby weight may be tough, but it is not impossible. Check out these three healthy tips for losing that weight without losing your mind.

Begin Slowly

Even if you stayed active throughout your entire pregnancy, it’s never a bad idea to get into exercise slowly after childbirth. Having a baby is a big deal. Your body just did something incredible, and it may not be ready to run miles. Let your body do its thing. Ease back into fitness slowly, and don’t push too hard. Doing too much too fast may result in injury or burnout when this can easily be avoided. Go for a walk, try some postnatal yoga, or enjoy a dip in the pool. All too soon you’ll be running miles and lifting weights, so for now enjoy the slow process.

Make It a Family Affair

After my first was born, I couldn’t leave him with anyone. Was that a bit crazy? Sure, but it is a sentiment that many new moms feel. Luckily, this doesn’t mean that you can’t workout. Pop your sweet little one in a stroller or in a sling, and go for a walk. Do you have older children? Let them play at the park while you take advantage of the walking trail. Buy a workout DVD and use your little one as a weight. There are so many ways to work out with the whole family, and considering how short this time with your little one really is, you may be glad you took advantage of the family time while you had the chance.

Cut Yourself Some Slack

You just grew a person. It took nine months to put those well deserved pounds on, so don’t expect them to come off any faster. Give yourself some credit, a little slack, and some time. With persistence and dedication, it will come off, but not if you work yourself up over it. Stick to a healthy diet, keep moving your body, and take good care of your little one. When you want a piece of cake, eat the darn cake. Then, jump back on your fitness path. You are not a model or a famous actress, and you don’t have to lose it in two weeks. Just enjoy your new baby, and trust in the process. Your body knows what it’s doing, so give yourself a bit of a break.

While the focus after childbirth should be about your baby and your health, losing weight is a struggle that all moms know all too well. Use these tips to gently and easily get back on your fitness path. Just remember that being thin and fit is great, but not near as rewarding as baby smiles and giggles. Enjoy your time as a new mom, stick to the plan, and the weight will fall off before you know it.
