How to Make Early Morning Workouts Happen

By Sandy Schroeder

I am the original night owl and I always feel like it is the middle of the night when I get up before the sun has come up, but a lot of people say this is the best time to exercise. They say there is nothing better than knocking off your workout before you start your work day.

Here are some good motivators.

Men’s Health and Reddit tackled the subject, looking at thousands of early risers to see how they made early morning workouts happen.

Use that six-second rule - The rule is you have to be doing the thing you don’t want to do by the time you reach six. Make the countdown a habit and you may be moving every morning.

Lay the groundwork - Sneak up on exercise. Get up at least an hour early to shower, eat a good breakfast and relax for a few minutes. Then head off to the gym.

Greatist.com weighed in with more tips to help you get on your way.

Hit the brights - Jessi Kneeland, creator of Remodel Fitness, explains how she makes it work. She switches on a bright light, turns up the tunes and grabs a cup of coffee to get going.

Move the alarm - Other early morning gym regulars recommend keeping the alarm away from the bed. By the time you get up to retrieve it the rest may be all downhill.

Do a quick splash - As soon as your feet hit the ground, head to the bathroom and splash your face with cold water.

Double alarms - Nike master trainer Holly Rilinger says she sets two alarms. The first one lets her sleep 15 more minutes. She also plays music, and has a cappuccino to get out the door.

Plan a great brunch - For early morning weekend runs, set up a favorite lunch or brunch spot for later and focus on that as you wake up.

Pick your favorite fuel - Start with your favorite energizers for breakfast as you get ready for your workout. By the time you polish off your coffee you will be set to go.

Have a workout buddy waiting - Meeting a friend to do an early gym workout makes a great motivator for both of you.

Keep doing whatever works to show up for early morning workouts. And try not to look too smug when you show up at work!
