Lose Weight: Slow Down and Savor Every Bite

By Sandy Schroeder

In a chaotic world with much of it spent at home, it has been very easy to add extra pounds in the past year. As Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers noted, "I exercise five days a week, but the refrigerator is open seven days a week!"

My refrigerator is open a lot too, and I have had to look for some new ways to lose weight and eat better. WebMD offers a great solution: slow down, eat mindfully and enjoy it more. Smell the aroma and taste the textures as you chew each mouthful thoroughly. Careful chewing also improves digestion as it reduces the food to allow the stomach's gastric juices to process everything.

What Needs to Change

Too often we park ourselves in front of the computer or TV and inhale our food without even really tasting it.

According to WebMD, it takes about 20 minutes from the time you start eating until your brain signals you are full. When we gobble everything and reach for seconds, we may be taking in a lot more food and calories than we need.

Slow Down and Savor the Moment

In contrast, when we eat slowly, and concentrate on the meal, everything changes. Now that perfectly grilled cheese sandwich, or fresh leafy green salad can get all of the attention it deserves if you find a quiet spot to enjoy your lunch and the day. Turn off your phone and simply enjoy your food.

In the evening, a sit-down meal with the family can work the same way. Turn off the electronics and mix your meal mixed with some good conversation. You may find yourself eating less and enjoying everything more.

The slow down principle can even work with dessert if you remember to enjoy each bite, appreciating the flaky crust or fresh fruit filling. Often just a few bites will be enough.

Tips to Make It Work

  • Vary your menu to keep each meal interesting
  • Trade take-out for home-baked goodies with less fat
  • Put your fork down between bites
  • Never eat while you are doing other things like working, reading or driving
  • Add more fiber to your meal with veggies such as beans, coleslaw, peas or Brussels sprouts
  • Allow more time for meals to make them better
  • Establish regular meal times

As you work out the details, see if you can plant the idea with your family too. After a while, special sit down meals may become a welcome tradition at your home. A time for everybody to share news, trade thoughts and eat better.
