Working With Your Hands May Relieve Stress
By Tom Herrin
In this modern day and age, many people perform jobs in offices using computers, handling money, or doing something in a production atmosphere. Even though these may involve using the hands, it is a very different function from using them to create. In older times, a large number of people used their hands in some kind of activity to make something that could be of use to make life more comfortable or add culture.
Being Creative Is Thought to Avert Aging
When people create things with their hands, it is believed they are able to keep their minds sharper. Not only is the coordination used which can develop the part of the brain involved, it also stirs some creative parts of the brain, keeping the brain active. This can be much like exercising any other part of the body. The activity itself can keep the mind more alert and, in a sense, younger. Using the hands to create something is referred to as crafting. It is considered to a be effective in helping to reduce some of the kinds of damage that the brain may suffer.
Crafting May Help To Give The Brain A Break
With the large number of things the brain has to process on a daily basis, it can simply be worn down. When people become involved in crafting activities, they can become lost in the concentration on the details of their work. This allows the brain to give more attention to the activity and block out the ordinary distractions that it is bombarded with regularly. It can serve as a defense mechanism. This break from stress and worry can also be an opportunity to enjoy greater happiness with the product with which the people doing the crafting is working.
It May Add More Quality To Life
Anytime you have an opportunity to become involved in a different type of activity, you may find a great sense of happiness in the endeavor. Personal satisfaction with the work of your hands is something that can provide an indescribable feeling. Seeing a creation from start to finish may improve perspective. If you don’t quite know what to choose, there are plenty of options. Whether it is woodworking, knitting, pottery making, quilting, or working in the garden, there is more than likely something that can fill the void for you. You can start by visiting a craft store or garden center. You must remember that you have to try something before you will know just what it can do for you.
