Living in a Vacation Place Doesn't Mean Skip One

By Tom Herrin

People should never take anything for granted. It is easy to do so when they fail to realize the need to vary their routine.  More people today choose to skip taking time off from work in order to stay on task. They may feel that they can get a little more done and stay ahead in their jobs.  The concept sounds simple enough. Working extra and saving up some time to spend later sounds like a great plan. There are two things wrong with it. One is that all too often they never get to spend that time they saved up.  The other is that there is more to taking a vacation than simply being off from work. They can increase productivity and improve mental, emotional, and physical health at the same time.

Vacations Can Be Good For the Heart

Studies have had some amazing findings when considering the effects on the heart of taking or skipping a vacation.  One found that women who did not take regular vacations were more likely to develop cardiac problems that those who took them.  Another found that men who took regular vacations were 32 percent less likely to die of a heart attack and 21 percent less likely to die of anything other than age-related problems than people who did not take vacations regularly.

Vacations Can Stimulate the Brain

A lot of people are concerned about keeping the brain functioning properly.  With the cases of dementia and things related to it seemingly increasing, many people have reason to worry.  Trying to find ways to keep the mind active can keep it progressing. Traveling and seeing new places and having new experiences can help the brain to maintain its ability to learn and create.  Even if the vacation is something more like a staycation, there is still an opportunity to see and experience new things.

Vacations May Salvage Relationships

We all need to spend some time with family members in a different setting.  Getting out of the same old routine and into some new surroundings can go a long way.  Even when we have vacationed close to home, we have found a way to do something different.  Going to museums, water parks, or amusement parks can all allow us to experience something new.  Simple tent camping can still be more fun than many of us want to believe. Do yourself and your family a favor: take some time off and spend it together doing something as a family.
