Get the Most From a Workout Without Strain

By Tom Herrin

As people get a little older, one of their bigger concerns about exercising is injuring themselves.  It can happen a lot, especially to those who are not particularly active. They may try to make up for lost time and end up hurting themselves.  There is a safer way to regain some of those things that may have been lost in all that time of being less active. There is no reason to avoid physical activity.  It simply needs to be done with the right perspective in mind. Isometrics are a way of participating in a resistance exercise without taking the chance of incurring an injury that could sideline them.  The results can be great.

They May Help to Work Against Age-Related Muscle Loss

It is often when someone sees themselves as they really are that they suddenly realize that maybe some improvement is necessary.  What they thought was muscle is actually what is called in dealing with livestock as “cover.” It is better known as fat. As people age and lose muscle, they often get that pudgy look.  Isometrics are an effective way to work those muscles and actually build them. They are much easier than the more conventional resistance training and much safer.

They May Be Good for Rehabilitation

When people have already suffered injuries to their muscles, the process of recovery is often slow.  They have to be particularly careful about working out. Isometrics is a good way to work on that recovery.  It is possible to work out the muscles without the potential damage that may be done to the joints. They require only that there is muscle contraction without movement, so the joints are not placed under stress.  Isometrics may be able to build stronger muscles in a shorter period of time.

They May Improve Flexibility

Doing isometrics is similar to good stretching in some ways.  They can provide better blood flow to the muscles for those sessions.  Since they can be done in short periods of time, the workout can be squeezed in without taking time away from other activities.  I have done isometrics in the past with good results. I found that I could concentrate on certain muscles and see progress in them in only a few short weeks.  There was never that feeling of being exhausted or overworked, but I still felt as if I had a pretty good workout. If you haven’t tried them, you may want to consider it.
