3 Gentle Ways to Get in Better Shape
By Genevieve Cunningham
Getting in shape is a worthy goal. Many people set their sights on this goal, and they truly have every intention of meeting it. So what happens? If so many people want to better their health, why aren’t there more people in tip-top shape? The answer may be in our approach. For many, setting the goal of getting into better shape means jumping on the workout wagon full steam ahead. They go all in, but as time goes on, their motivation fades while the soreness climbs. So what happens? They give up! If you are serious about improving your health for the long haul, take a look at these gentle ways to approach better fitness for the rest of your life.
Walking
Walking is a great way to get in better shape without overworking the body. You can walk anywhere -- a gym, a treadmill, the local track, a park, or in an open field -- and it can be adapted as you need. It’s gentle on the body, especially the joints, which makes it an excellent choice for those suffering from arthritis. All you need is a little time and some good shoes to get started in this activity and you’ll be headed toward better health in no time at all.
Water Workouts
Workouts in the water can be either strenuous or gentle depending on the activity. If you’re looking for a gentle workout, choose the exercises that are easier on the body. A slow swim, a slower paced water aerobics class, or simple water walking can help you get in better shape without stressing the body too quickly. If the weather is warm, find a good outdoor pool to get in your workout and cool off at the same time. If it’s cool out, find a good indoor pool at a local gym so that you can take a dip year-round.
Yoga
Yoga is another activity that can be either strenuous or gentle. With yoga, it all depends on the type and the teacher. Some types of yoga -- such as Bikram -- are extremely intense. You’ll be sweating and lightheaded and sore. Other types of yoga are incredibly gentle on the body. If you want to use yoga to get in better shape, look for a beginner class. These classes will be easier to follow and easier on the body as a whole. Yoga is usually a love it or hate it kind of exercise, so go in with an open mind and you may be able to enjoy the gentle process of improving your health.
It’s OK to take the gentle route to getting in better shape and improving your health. There’s no rule that says you have to go extreme or stay home. In fact, a gentle approach is more sustainable long-term. Give these exercises a try in your routine. You may find that getting and staying in shape is not only possible, but something that you can enjoy for the rest of your life.
