3 Ways to Stay Healthy at the Sate Fair This Year

By Genevieve Cunningham

It’s almost fall in Texas. What does this mean? Mostly, it doesn’t mean much. The weather will go from cool to hot almost daily. The leaves will fall, but they won’t really be those beautiful hues of orange and red. But even though it takes a while for the fall to fully settle in Texas, there’s one thing that really screams autumn like nothing else. The State Fair. This is the time of year when thousands of people head over to the fair to enjoy corn dogs, live music, and livestock shows. It’s a staple in Dallas, and it’s something that almost everyone enjoys. But if we’re being honest, the fair can also be incredibly unhealthy. If you would like to enjoy your State Fair trip this season, but still keep your health intact, take a look at these tips for making your State Fair experience a healthy one.

Plan on Walking

The State Fair is big. You can look at the livestock on one side, walk through the buildings to see cars and vendors, or hit the midway for some serious fun. But one thing’s for sure … you’re definitely going to be on the move! Make sure that you’re wearing comfortable and supportive shoes to keep your feet and back pain-free. And then prepare yourself to walk. Don’t wear clothes that are too restrictive or uncomfortable. Don’t expect to hitch a ride from one side to the other. If you plan on walking, then wear the appropriate clothes and shoes; you can get in your exercise while having fun all at the same time.

Dress Appropriately

Texas weather is notoriously unpredictable. It could be 90 degrees and sunshine today, and then be 60 degrees and raining tomorrow. You’ve heard the old adage: If you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait a minute. When it comes to checking out the fair, it’s best to prepare. Check the weather before you go, and then pack your car with options. Wear short sleeves, but carry a light jacket. Don’t forget sunscreen and glasses, no matter the weather.  Keep an umbrella handy. Being able to adjust to your environment may keep you healthier, more comfortable, and potentially keep you away from illness.

Easy on the Food

Everyone knows that the food at the State Fair is absolutely delicious! But it’s also absolutely unhealthy. Everything is fried -- fried turkey legs, fried Oreos, fried Twinkies. It’s both delicious and disgusting. If you really want to watch your health, it’s probably best to steer clear of the food section at the fair. Take snacks if you can, or if you’re really keen on buying your food there, look for vendors with slightly healthier options. You may be able to find a salad, a chicken sandwich, or even some veggies. Be picky about what goes into your mouth, and your fair trip (and the next day!) will feel a lot better.

Everyone loves the State Fair. It’s a blast! But there’s no denying that it’s hard to stay healthy on your trip. Use these tips to help you fight food cravings, prepare your body, and keep you generally well. With a little forethought and some easy prep, you can enjoy your trip and stay healthy at the fair this year.
