How is Your Gut Health Impacting Your Life?
By Sara Butler
Most people have no idea if their gut bacteria can pass muster. In a perfect world, everyone would have a thriving microbiome in their gut that created digestion perfection, but we don't live in a perfect world. As a result, very few people have a perfect gut and the ones who don't probably don't even know it. Stress, antibiotics or other medications, and processed foods can all wreak havoc on your gut. Here are a few ways to tell if your microbiome could use a little tune up.
You're Sick a Lot
You may not realize it, but your gut is one of your body's best defenders. In fact, if you don't have a healthy gut, then you don't have a well-functioning immune system either. If you find yourself always getting sick, then it may be because your gut simply isn't balanced.
You Have Brain Fog
If you find that you have difficulty concentrating or remembering things, then it may be because of your gut! Your gut and your brain are connected by your vagus nerve. So, if the gut is inflamed or damaged, then it can cause problems in the communication between your brain and the rest of your body.
You're Tired All the Time
Your gut bacteria helps your body to digest food properly. If it's working as it should, then your body can break down the food for the nutrients it needs to work optimally. If your gut isn't healthy, then it can't absorb what your body needs and your energy levels will suffer.
You Have Skin Problems
Your gut bacteria also helps to protect the lining of your intestines from damage. If the lining does become damaged, then partially digested food can leak out -- a problem called leaky gut. When that happens, then your skin can have issues such as acne or rosacea.
What to Do
If you are worried about the health of your gut, then do something about it! Eat foods that are high in fiber and work to get enough sleep each night. Also think about adding probiotics to your diet to help feed the good gut bacteria and help it thrive. Eat whole foods and try to stay away from processed foods while you're at it!
