How to Keep Your Family Healthy

When it comes to your family’s health, you must think of your family as a team. Everyone must work together in order to promote healthy habits and activities. But every team needs a leader and this is where parents come into play. There are easy ways you can promote better health in your family -- here are some suggestions to help you get started.

Be a Good Example

One of the most effective ways to teach your children about healthy habits is to show them. You know -- walk the walk as you talk the talk! You are an important role model for your child, so talk about why you eat baby carrots as a snack, why you take Zumba, or how your daily dog walk helps to keep you healthy. Your children will pick up on it and want to be just like you.

Start Young

It’s never too early to talk about health and wellness with your family. Don’t wait until your child is struggling with their weight or other healthy habits before you launch into the how and why of healthy lifestyle habits.

Get Active Together

Make being active together an activity that seems natural. Your children can blow off all that extra energy as you all reap the health benefits of an active lifestyle together. It’ll probably make bedtime go much easier too -- which is something every parent wants!

Work in the Kitchen Together

You may not be able to bring your whole family into the kitchen with you each day, but it’s important to involve your family in the process of cooking dinner. They can learn how to prepare food for themselves as they get older (a great life skill) and can also learn about nutrition. Talk about where the food comes from, how it’s grown or produced, and the best ways to cook it so it remains nutritious. A lot can be learned together in the kitchen and it’s a solid foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating habits for your children.

Have a Meal Together

You may have heard how important it is to eat meals as a family -- and it’s so important it bears repeating again! It’s time you can spend together to talk about your day and it’s a way to model healthy eating habits for your children in the process. You can offer nutritious food and learn about your kids’ lives all at once -- it’s a win-win situation!

Remember, a family that is healthy together is, well, healthy!
