Time to Get Off the Couch and Start Getting Healthy!
By Stephen R. Farris
Are you getting enough exercise?
Research suggests that we should put in at least 150 minutes of exercise each week. It doesn't have to be anything drastic, like one of those gladiator camps that seem to be popping up everywhere. While they are beneficial, and it may be something to consider joining as you progress, just doing something basis such as walking or running can be a good way to start.
One of the most popular forms of exercising is aerobic exercise. This can consist of brisk walking, jogging, swimming, riding a bike, doing chores around the house such as gardening, or playing a team sport like soccer or basketball.
Aerobic exercise helps get the blood flowing and works most of your major muscle groups, as well as being good for your heart.
Here are some of the benefits you'll get from doing aerobic type exercise:
- Improves heart health
- It can lower blood pressure
- Helps to regulate your blood sugar
- Helps reduce chronic pain
- Helps you sleep better
- Helps you maintain or lose weight
- It can serve as an immune booster
- Improves brain function
- Improves your overall mood
- Helps you maintain good balance
- Safe for adults and children
- Cheap and easier way to better health
If you choose to walk, run, or cycle, you can start out in your neighborhood if the terrain is fairly smooth. Most communities and cities have parks with walking/jogging paths free of charge, plus it's a great way to breathe in some fresh air and bond a little with nature.
If swimming is your thing, you may have to pay a small fee for pool use at a local YMCA, or the city park pool (if your town has one).
Always remember, if you have questions about exercising and wondering how to start, talk with your local chiropractor to hear some of the tips and suggestions they may have to help you on the road to a healthier, more active lifestyle. And if you are feeling pain in your back, neck, and joints, they can help you get relief from those too.
