A Stronger Core Could Lead to Better Health
By Stephen R. Farris
After indulging in all of those holiday goodies the last few months, that six-pack tummy you had been working hard to achieve last year, may start to look more like that innertube used to float the river.
Whether you're looking to get back into your fitness routine, or just starting one for the first time, here are a couple of simple exercises that can help you get back or on the right track to fitness health. Best of all, they're variations of just one exercise. Planking.
The benefits of planking help with strengthening your core, easing back pain, and provide support for your spine.
Regular Planks
Correct technique for a regular plank is to keep your neck and spine in harmony, shoulders down and back, and keep in mind not to bend the hips. You want to be as stiff and straight as possible. Remember, you might not be able to hold the pose for a full minute. So if you can only do a few seconds that's fine. You can always work your way up in increments until you can do a full minute hold. The goal is to do 1-6 repetitions for one set, holding for 10 to 60 seconds, then resting up to 90 seconds between reps.
Front Plank on Your Knees
Instead of extending out full length, for this technique you'll be on your knees but using the same style of staying straight from your core area to your head. Try doing at least 1-6 repetitions for one set, holding the pose for 10 to 60 seconds, then resting in-between for approximately 30 to 90 seconds.
