Running on Empty? Get Some Natural Energy Going
By Sandy Schroeder
At this time of year we could all use more energy. Here are a few recommendations from a group of health experts to recharge energy quickly and naturally.
Check these tips from Shape.com.
Stand up – We all sit too long at our desks, hunching over our keyboards. Break away for a few minutes to jump start your heart and muscles. Do a few stretches or take a quick walk. Your body will be happier and your mind will be more productive.
Head for the sun – Step outside for a few minutes to soak up some sunlight. A quick dose of sun can lift your mood and spark new energy with a dose of Vitamin D.
Link up with high energy pals – Stay in touch with the people who always make you feel great. Some people can bring you down, and others provide a lift. Stick with the energetic ones who keep your brain moving and your spirits up.
Take a deep breath – Knowing how to completely inhale and exhale energizes the body, according to the experts. Try this simple breathing exercise:
- Inhale to the count of six; hold to a count of three as you tense the body’s muscles
- Relax, slowly exhaling to a count of six, holding the breath out to a count of three
- Repeat to establish a rhythm
Reach for an apple – Apples are totally portable and chock-full of Vitamin C and complex carbohydrates to boost energy and keep blood sugar stable. According to Florida State University researchers apples help lower bad LDL cholesterol and fight inflammation.
Stay hydrated – Put a water canister on your desk and carry water with you wherever you go to maintain body fluids, avoiding overall tiredness, mental fogginess, dizziness and brain fade.
Make your posture work for you – Have someone take a picture of you at your desk. You may be surprised to see slumped shoulders and the head jutting forward. This forward leaning posture puts added strain on the neck and shoulders. Sit up straight in your chair, keeping your back and shoulders supported with your head centered over your spine. You will feel better and look better, and your body will be much happier. Good posture energizes the body and the brain.
Staying active and in tune with your body can make all of the difference in your energy levels.
