How to Lose the Fear of Failing
By Sandy Schroeder
The fear of failing is very common, usually left over from a previous disastrous situation. Sometimes we can be rational and remember all of the things that have gone well; other times that fear gives us pause.
TinyBuddha.com tells us to keep on going until we score. Learning how to let go of the fear of failing can be tricky. Just when you think you have, it may pop up again. However, I think this quote says it all: “You have only failed when you have failed to try.”
Failure and Success Coexist
If you can think of times when you did not try because you feared failure, and later wished that you had, you can relate. Making the effort to go out there and take your best shot is still the way to go. Failure and success are both part of the same process.
Many of the most successful people that I have known have told me they failed many times before they succeeded. One fellow, who wound up as a CEO in a major company, said he was just getting by when his struggles to sell his inventions finally came through. From there it was all about success and he wound up with several patents. Hanging in there is really what it is all about.
We Succeed by Trying
Think about all of the skills that you have, and the experience that you have acquired in various jobs. All of that talent and knowledge came from your willingness to jump in and learn. Every time you respond to a challenge you are opening the door to new opportunities. The only time we really fail is when we simply settle into a groove and forget to move forward.
Believe in Yourself
Sometimes it is good to remind yourself of your past successes. Remember projects that took every ounce of energy but were well worth it when you finally scored? Recall long hours and serious challenges that were tough to do, but rewarding when they were done? All of those experiences can make it easier to go forward with confidence now. Sometimes they even provide clues for current problems or answers for new issues.
Watch Out for Self-Induced Pressure
If you look around at your current work situation, it may be fine. So why are you having doubts and fear of failure? Sometimes that seems to come from self-induced pressures, where we push a little too hard to make sure everything will work. One little doubt can lead to more, and pretty soon we are basically worrying for very little reason.
Whenever fears pop up, step back and consider what’s happening. Look a little closer as you accept the possibility of failure but also realize you just might succeed.
