What to Do When Work Seems Harder

By Sandy Schroeder

If you feel like you are off track at work, you may be making it harder than it needs to be. Business Insider says struggling with a career can undermine efforts at work and at home. When everything feels out of whack, corrections are needed to quickly turn things around before they get worse.

The good news is most situations can be improved when you get down to the issues. Business Insider suggests some simple ways to tackle the situation.

Reach Out for Help

When things get complicated, it’s easy to hide out, but reaching out may be the quickest way to get things back on track. Talking to your boss and co-workers can help you put things into a clearer perspective. You may be surprised to find out they have their own doubts and issues. Working together with others can open new doors, increase motivation and make the whole process a lot more comfortable.

Tackle the Tough Tasks First

The longer you wait the bigger a crucial task may seem. Tackle it first and the rest of the day will be a lot easier. Mark Twain compared this effort to “eating a frog.”  Single out all of the “frogs” on your list and knock them off first.

Maintain a Work Life Balance

If you find yourself sliding into an endless work groove, you may encounter burnout and feel like your creativity is evaporating. Reserve evenings and weekends to spend time with your family and friends. Life becomes richer and more interesting when we maintain productive home and work lives. Each may refresh the other.

Don’t Let Indecision Weigh You Down

Most of us have known someone who does this. They are never satisfied until they have found the perfect decision. In the process, they may have wasted a lot of time and bogged everything down. Usually it’s best to review the facts and promptly make the best decision that you can. Then move on. The more you do this the better you will feel about the process.

Look for New Projects and Ideas

New ideas, projects, or contacts may help you put a whole new spin on your job. I have watched people do this when they seemed to have hit a wall. Instead of dropping back and giving up, they just looked for new approaches and often found better ones that they enjoyed more.
