Surprising Ways to Get Ahead at Work
By Sandy Schroeder
We all know that extra hours, extra effort and on-time appearances help, but after that the advice that works for getting ahead in your career may be a surprise, according to Business Insider. They suggest these steps.
Be Willing to Switch Brands
Loyalty is still valued, but staying put for two or more years could reduce your lifetime earnings by as much as 50 percent. When you settle in and collect regular raises, you may wind up earning a lot less than you would if you made a jump to another competitor.
Learn How to Talk to Anybody
Communication skills are often overlooked. Like driving, everybody assumes they communicate all of the time so they must know how it works. We all talk, text, email, call and chat with people, but most of us could use a little help to get it right. If you do not always get the answer you expected, take a close look at your communications to see what works and what does not.
Be Aware When You Use Your Phone
If you are seen checking every call, and then don’t answer when someone in your company calls, you have just sent the wrong message to them.
Look Like You Are Open for Business
Most people strive to look busy, but if you look too busy, you may be seen as overloaded and frazzled. People who move ahead look alert, aware and ready to take on the next big project.
Become Financially Literate
You may not have a clue about the intricacies of the financial world, but if you plan to succeed and do well, you need to know what to do with all of that money. Start reading Barrons or talk to a pal who went to business school and make it homework to understand financial basics.
Don’t be the Obnoxious Lunch Person
Cooking fish, bringing in smelly cheeses, or creating a real mess in the office lunchroom is not the way you want to go. Don’t be that person.
Be Different Not Better
If you were a lot better you would already be the boss, but being different may get everybody’s attention. Start with your best features and use them where they fit best. Some people do analysis amazingly well. Others use words better than most. Still others know how to reach out to people and keep everything together. Make sure your skills are apparent.
Moving ahead is always an interesting game. Use the tips that work for you, and keep looking for more.
