Cooking Tips for Healthy Eating
By Sara Butler
According to many experts, the very first thing you need to do in order to get healthy is to eat at home. This may not be a problem for some people with a bit of culinary flair, but if your skills in the kitchen don’t go beyond the microwave, you may run into some obstacles. Here are some tips to help you get started cooking healthy!
Why Bother?
The United States Department of Health and Human Services reports that people with a poor diet are at a higher risk of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, some types of cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. The more you can cook your own meals in your home, the more you can avoid added fats, calories, sugar, salt, and trans fat you run into when eating out. Don’t worry, you don’t have to be Julia Child, you just need to learn a few of the basics!
Be Confident!
One of the basics of cooking has nothing to do with what you do in the kitchen but how you feel about yourself. Learning to cook is something that takes a lot of practice. Sometimes you’ll be successful, sometimes you won’t. But the important thing is that you try! Turn your mistakes into learning experiences so you don’t fall into the same cooking trap twice.
Discover What Skills are Needed
You think about the type of foods you like to eat and what skills you need to learn in order to pull them off. For example, if you like to eat stir-fry, then you need to learn how to grill meats and properly clean and chop vegetables. Start slow and build up your skills in the kitchen a little bit at a time.
Use Simple Recipes
Find basic techniques and good instructions to help you try some easy recipes to start. Recipes you find online are a great way to find food that’s healthy for you and teach you essential techniques you need to cook. Master the most basic skills first, then go from there!
Start Out With Breakfast
If you’re sick of cereal or oatmeal every morning, then start learning how to cook a healthy and nutritious breakfast. Tackle one meal at a time and you’ll find that it’s easier and less overwhelming. There are some very simple breakfast recipes out there to try!
Cooking can be fun, you just need to practice and before you know it, you'll be on your way to better -- and tastier -- health!
