Handling Desk Work the Chiropractor's Way

By Brandi Swieter

Working from a desk is a common practice in office settings. It entails sitting for long intervals and it can often put strain on the back if people aren't considerate of their bodies. Desk work done the chiropractor's way provides relief to the back and ensures a proper work setting avoidant of pain.

Redesign Your Workspace

Far too many workers try to force themselves to accommodate their surroundings rather than make their surroundings accommodate them. Redesigning the workspace is a major step toward experiencing a pain-free workday. The chair should be appropriately leveled so the person sitting in it has their feet touching the ground and their back straight. The computer screen should be raised to eye level so there is no neck strain. Having supplies nearby will prevent reaching, which can also cause pain. Setting up the workstation correctly will make the day run much more smoothly.

Remember the 20/20/20 Rule

The rule goes that a person using a screen should stop every 20 minutes and take at least 20 seconds to look at another object 20 feet away. This gives the eyes a break and helps to clear the mind so it can focus better on the task at hand. It can also help to prevent neck strain that is possible from looking at the same thing for long periods.

Walk as Much as Possible Throughout the Day

People who spend their days in a chair tend to develop pain in their legs. It even has the potential to cause blood clots. Workers who sit frequently need to be sure they are getting up and walking as much as possible throughout the day. This could mean going for a walk on a lunch break, using the stairs instead of an elevator to go between floors, hand delivering memos to office workers instead of emailing them, or otherwise getting up and moving when able to do so.

Make Regular Chiropractic Visits

Desk workers should visit the chiropractor regularly. They are likely to experience pain and discomfort during the workday, but having regular visits will remove joint restrictions and help ensure the body is in proper form so it can better handle the accommodations during work hours.

Visit The Joint Chiropractic at one of their more than 425 locations. A doctor of chiropractic can help to alleviate tension in the body and ensure workers can continue their job duties pain-free.
