Guitar Strumming With Chiropractic in Mind

By Brandi Goodman

Learning to play an instrument, such as the guitar, is great for your overall health. It can help keep your brain active and un-aging, as well as provide a release for some stress that helps your mental health. You need to be careful when you're playing though. Do it wrong and you'll be left in pain. Practice guitar strumming with chiropractic in mind to play pain-free.

Sit Up Straight

You may notice some guitar players slouching over their instrument. This will quickly lead to back pain if you aren't careful. It's much better to sit up straight when you're strumming so you can keep your spine aligned. There's a safe way to play a guitar and slouching isn't part of it.

Film Yourself Playing

A big part of the problem for many guitar players is that they want to look down at what they're doing. Especially when you're first learning which chords to strum, you will find yourself looking down at your hands often and making sure you're playing the right ones. Film yourself playing instead, or even use a mirror, so you can look forward toward something. You can watch how your hands are moving and check whether you're doing it right without having to constantly tilt your neck and cause yourself discomfort.

Make Sure to Stretch

Stretching is vital for any activity. Playing the guitar is no exception. You should be taking frequent breaks and making sure to stretch while you do. Get up and stand if you've been sitting for awhile and stretch out your legs and back. Most importantly, you need to stretch out your arms and wrists, since they're what you use most while you're playing. You can develop carpal tunnel or pain in your elbow if you aren't careful.

Stay Hydrated

When you take those stretching breaks, be sure to get yourself some water as well. You need to keep your joints hydrated so they're less likely to experience injury. Flexible joints are better able to handle the activity you're doing and can maintain their pliability longer. Don't just take a few sips during your practice time. You need to be drinking water throughout the day -- every day -- for a truly hydrated and healthy body.

Strum your guitar safely with chiropractic advice in mind. If you still find your back or shoulders aching after you've had a jam session, head into The Joint Chiropractic for a consultation. Even a slight joint restriction could be inhibiting your play time and preventing you from rocking out the way you want.
