The Chiropractor Says You Can Drive Without Pain

By Brandi Goodman

Driving a short distance away probably won't hurt you, but a long drive can easily lead to back pain if you aren't careful. Pain while driving doesn't have to be the norm, though. Chiropractors say you can drive without pain as long as you keep some tips in mind.

Men: Take Out Your Wallet

Lots of men keep a wallet in the back pocket of their jeans. Sit down like this in the car and you're going to be in pain quickly. The wallet raises one side of your body slightly higher than the other. This puts your spine out of alignment and can lead to some serious tension in your lower back and hips. Take out your wallet before your drive and keep it in the center console instead.

Women: Avoid Driving in Heels

Heels shouldn't be worn while driving. The heel of the shoe can get stuck easily as you're attempting to switch from one pedal to the other. They can also make your feet hurt fast, especially if they're new. You don't want your shoes to start causing foot pain while you're driving. You may find yourself shifting in your seat and moving your feet to ease your discomfort. This can shift your focus away from the road and become a danger. Keep a pair of driving shoes in your vehicle so you can switch out of your heels if you had them on for work or an outing.

Everyone: Adjust Your Seat for Proper Posture

You need to use proper posture at all times -- including while you're driving. You should be sitting upright with your back supported by the seat behind you. The steering wheel should be a short distance away, with your arms bent slightly. Sitting properly ensures you won't be reaching far, sitting scrunched, or otherwise experiencing discomfort as you drive a while.

Everyone: Keep Your Tires in Check

Did you know your tires can be the culprit of the bounce you feel as you're driving? They need to be in good condition and properly aired up if you want to have a smooth ride. The bumpiness of the road can really bump your body around when you're in the car and cause you discomfort.

Driving for long intervals can cause pain to set in. You need to be sure you're taking regular breaks and stretching, as well as using proper posture in the car. A trip to the chiropractor before and after a long drive should also be in order so you can keep your body in the best condition possible.
