What Causes Back Pain?

By Randi Morse

Did you know that it is estimated that about 80 percent of adults suffer from back pain at one point in their life or another? Back pain is a very common complaint, and one of the biggest issues with it is that it's often difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of your back pain. Most pain is easy to diagnose. If you fall and break your leg, you know why you have the pain that you do. When it comes to back pain, however, things get tricky. There are so many different things that can cause pain in your spine and back that understanding the cause of your pain may be almost impossible. And it could be that you're well on your way to working up to a back problem.

Back Pain Causes

As I said, there are several things that can cause back pain. One trigger that you may be unfamiliar with is stress. It may seem strange to think that stress is a significant cause of back pain, but studies show that not only can stress cause back pain, it can make it far worse. Your body reacts differently when you're stressed. When you're relaxed, your muscles are loose, allowing your body to rest comfortably. When you're stressed, however, the muscles in your body tense up, causing them to pull in a way that they normally do not. This can pull your spine out of alignment. When that happens, you will likely experience pain and have problems accomplishing even the simplest of tasks.

Leading a sedentary lifestyle and sitting in a chair for too long can also cause back pain. Your back needs to move and bend in order to stay healthy, and if you're sitting still for too long, especially if you have poor posture or a chair that isn't supportive enough, you can wind up with back pain. If you drive for too long without taking a break, or if you twist or bend too far, you put yourself at risk for dealing with back pain.

A chiropractor can use targeted spinal adjustments to help with any misalignment issues that you may have, no matter if they've been caused by stress, moving wrong, or a sedentary lifestyle. Once your chiropractor has worked on the pressing issue, you can continue visiting to maintain your spinal health.
