Kids Have Practice? 3 Tips for Exercise While There

By Virginia Laird

For many, back-to-school life means time to hit the ball field. Many fall sports begin gearing up this time of year. With that, many parents may find themselves playing chauffer to their children and spending hours on end at the practice field. Rather than let this time slip away, health and wellness experts advise that parents can get some exercise in while waiting for the practice to end. Although you may think this is a silly concept, there are plenty of ways to get a quick workout in without looking too crazy on the sideline. A few ideas offered by these professionals include:

  • Walk while waiting at practice
  • Squats can be done at the field
  • Consider interval training while there

Walk While Waiting at Practice

With the time spent waiting at practice, health and wellness experts suggest this can be a great time to get some exercise. Walking can offer fantastic cardio. A brisk walk around the field or parking lot of your child’s practice can help you squeeze just a little bit more into your day. Before too long you may find other parents who would like to stop sitting the hour of practice away and start making a move to improve their health with you.

Squats Can Be Done at the Field

Squats are an exercise that can be taken anywhere you go, making practice time as good as any to get in a few squats. This is especially great for areas where there is little space. Squats can be done next to your car. As always, it is best to make sure you are using proper form, which can be found here. There are also a host of variations of squats that can keep your exercise fun. Check here to find some of these variations.

Consider Interval Training While There

Many fitness gurus advise that interval training can promote rapid weight loss. For those who need something to do while waiting for your child(ren) at practice, this can be beneficial. Interval training can be as simple as sprinting the length of the parking lot then doing lunges on the way back.

Before you get too hung up on trying to be perfect, remember to keep your workout simple while waiting for your son or daughter. Now go throw a pair of workout shoes in your car so that you will always have them and eliminate any excuse for skipping your extra minutes of exercise. Above all else, have fun while you are exercising!
