Hand Pain: What You Should Know
By Sara Butler
Pain in the hand is something nearly everyone has experienced at one point or another. Maybe you used your mouse at your desk a little too much or you fell and landed strangely on it -- pain happens. But if the hand pain is accompanied by tingling, numbness, or weakness, then you may have a more serious problem on your, well, hands. Here is what you need to know about hand pain and how your chiropractor can help.
The Root of the Problem
Hand numbness and pain are often caused by problems in the wrist or health issues such as rheumatoid arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome. What a lot of people don’t know is that hand pain can also be caused by a problem in the neck.
Nerve roots exit your spinal cords through small holes in the bones of your spine. If one of these nerve roots becomes irritated or compressed, then symptoms can appear anywhere along the nerve's route -- even all the way to the hand.
The most common causes of nerve irritation or compression in the neck are:
- Herniated disc – When the inner part of the disc that sits between the bones in the spine leaks through the outer layers, it can compress or irritate the nerve
- Degenerative disc disease – As the discs between the vertebrae become brittle with age or wear down, this can cause problems with the bones in the neck
- Stenosis – The small hole where nerve roots exit the spinal cord through the vertebrae narrows, pinching the nerve root
