Things Secretly Wrecking Your Workout
By Sara Butler
A lot of people who exercise regularly hit the dreaded plateau. You know, that place where you exercise regularly, eat right, and still – nothing is happening. It’s very frustrating and to fix it you must discover the reason you’ve hit a plateau in the first place. Start by looking to your fitness routine because there may be some things going on that are undermining all your efforts and you may not even realize it. Here are just a few of the things that may be wrecking your workout.
You’re Eating Too Many Calories
When you work out that’s not license to eat anything you want. Unless you’re training at an Olympic or professional athlete level, there’s no reason to have additional calories both before and after a workout. It’s normal to work in “cheat” meals each week to help keep you sane but understand that you should only eat when you need to in order to help your body recover, not just because you’re exercising.
You’re Doing Too Much
Yes, there is such a thing as too much cardio. Intense cardio can cause you to lose muscle tone. To help avoid this you should ramp up your cardio a little at a time. Also, make sure you have the right gear for your workout so you can keep challenging yourself and make gains instead of getting stuck.
Too much weight training is also a danger, even if it’s essential to a well-rounded workout. You should do be doing resistance training 4 to 5 days a week along with your cardiovascular workout in order to try to find a good balance between cardio and weight training. Too much of one or the other won’t help you reach your goals.
You Don’t Sleep Enough
An essential part of any good workout routine is rest, and getting enough sleep each night is incredibly important to your overall health and balance. Strive for seven to eight hours of quality sleep each and every night in order to help you stay healthy and on the right track.
Your Goals are Unworkable
If you’ve been working hard for months and feel as if you’re not getting closer to your goals, it’s time to take a step back and think about if your goals are right for you. If you’re trying for Rambo-level muscle definition, just because you’ve not found it doesn’t mean you’re not changing your body in many positive ways. One of the keys to being in great shape is to make sure you just keep going, so make sure your goals are keeping your motivated so you can celebrate your successes along the way.
Exercise is only one small part of the health equation. You must take care of yourself in all the ways that matter to attain true health!
