Don't Call in Sick to the Chiropractor
By Sara Butler
Flu season has been rough this year! It seems as if people are falling ill left and right. If you happen to be one of those people and feeling under the weather just happens to coincide with when you should be visiting your chiropractor at The Joint for a regular adjustment, then you may be tempted to skip it. Most people adhere to the rule that if you’re sick with something as contagious as the flu, then you shouldn’t be out in public. While that is certainly a good rule to live by, you should ignore it when it comes to your chiropractic adjustments. Here are just a few reasons why your chiropractor doesn’t want you to call in sick when it’s time for an adjustment! After all, most pharmacies have surgical masks for you to purchase to protect you from germs (and protect others from your germs).
Your Body is a Fighter
When you’re sick, your immune system has kicked into high gear in order to fight back against what is ailing you. The symptoms you experience when ill are the signs that your body is fighting back. They can be a struggle to get through, but know that your body is doing what it was made to do -- heal itself. That mild fever? It’s creating a hostile environment for what is trying to attack you. That runny nose? It’s your body’s way of shedding the virus or other organisms that are trying to take hold. The point is, you may feel bad, but that’s your body’s way of letting you know that it’s trying to work for you!
How Chiropractic Helps
It may not occur to you right away to see your chiropractor when you’re feeling sick, but that’s exactly who you should see! In fact, your chiropractor’s office is the place you need to be when you’re sick because the adjustments they perform on your body help your immune system to function at its very best.
Your central nervous system is linked to your immune system. Chiropractic adjustments can help when you’re sick by improving the function of your central nervous system, which then regulates the function of every other system in your body -- including the immune system. When you take care of your spine, you take care of your whole body.
At The Joint, you never need an appointment, but if you are sick, then it may be wise to call ahead and let them know you’re feeling bad but that you still want to come in for an adjustment. They can give you an idea of when the best time may be to drop by when it’s unlikely fewer patients will be around. And again, investing in a box of surgical masks can really help in the long run.
