Health Warning: Get Rid of that Pan!
By Sara Butler
Is it time for a cookware makeover in your kitchen? You may think your pots and pans are just fine -- what’s a little rust and a few scratches, right? The truth is that these warped, sad pans could have a negative impact on your health. Here’s when you need to start asking yourself if a new set of cookware is in order with a few telltale signs it’s time for them to go!
Your favorite pan has probably seen a fair amount of mealtime action. But if the surface of the pan is warped, then it’s time to go. That’s not simply because all your cooking oil shifts to the left, but also because it can impact the quality of the food you’re cooking. A pan must lay flat on the burner in order to cook food evenly and a pan with a loose handle or a warped cooking surface won’t allow that to happen. Your beautiful sauté could turn into a burned nightmare or worse, not cook all the way through!
A Scratched Surface
A scratched cooking surface looks bad and can potentially pose a threat to your health. Some materials can seep chemicals into your food as it cooks if the surface is scratched. A man-made chemical called Perfluorooctanoic acid, also known as PFOA or C8, is used to make Teflon and similar fluorotelomers to create a nonstick cooking surface. The American Cancer Society has found a link between these chemicals and increased risk of cancerous tumors. If your pan is scratched, then it needs to go for the safety of your family.
Pans that are discolored or rusted are telling you that it's their time to retire. This is due to the safety of the food you cook in them since rust or other materials can flake off the pan’s surface into your food. You can try to scrub off any discoloration with a salt scrub or even vinegar, but it’s probably best to get rid of them and move on.
If you’ve had a pan in your kitchen that could tell some great stories about the older George Bush and his presidency (or even the younger) it’s time to take a long look at your pans and their place in your kitchen. It might be time to give up the ghost and get new pans that will ensure the continued health and wellness of you and your family.
