Fast, Healthy Breakfast Ideas
By Paul Rothbart
We've all heard it, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But for many, morning is the most hectic part of the day with the least time available for food preparation. A cup of coffee and maybe a slice of toast is often all that seems to fit the schedule. But there are options that are not only fast, but healthy.
Prepare a Meal Ahead of Time
Seems simple but in the heat of getting ready for the busy day, this concept can be elusive. Nobody said breakfast has to be made right before you consume it. This is the key to the kingdom. Foods that can be made in larger quantities and stored are great to have on hand to grab for a quick breakfast. With the right ingredients, they will taste great, keep you healthy and get your day off to a good start.
Muffins
These delicious baked treats can be made by the dozen and stored for the morning meal. Best of all, there are many fruits, nuts and other ingredients that can be added to make sure you are getting nutrients. Blueberries, cranberries and walnuts are traditional muffin add-ins that are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Even a little dark chocolate will not only taste great, but can lower blood pressure. Don't forget bran. Fiber is important too.
Smoothies
Breakfast doesn't have to be eaten either. What is more portable than a beverage? A tasty smoothie can be whipped up the night before and poured into a travel mug. As for ingredients, the sky's the limit. Fresh fruits of all kinds and vegetables are all fair game. Choose the ones you like best and get your morning nutrition. Yogurt and peanut butter are two other delicious and healthy choices that can be easily blended into your smoothie.
Parfaits
For those who prefer to use a spoon, a parfait is an excellent breakfast. The same fruits, yogurt and nuts that can be used in muffins and smoothies work in this delicious, fast to eat meal. Granola adds crunch and is packed with nutrients. An entire week's worth of parfaits can be made and stored for your convenience.
Fruit Salad
A fruit salad is another way to go. This can be prepared in a large quantity which you can serve yourself each morning. The fruit is sweet and tasty and will give you essential vitamins and other nutrients Try sprinkling it with some quinoa for protein and fiber.
With a busy schedule, there never seems to be enough time to do everything on the task list. But breakfast does not have to be crossed off or skimped on. By making batches of these healthy foodstuffs using your favorite ingredients, you can wake up your body, mind and your taste buds.
