North Texas Is A Place to Plan For Emergencies

By Tom Herrin

In light of recent hurricanes that have caused so much devastation, many people have had to take notice.  Much of it is in the form of being glad they don’t live by the coast.  It isn’t quite that simple.  I live more than 200 miles from the coast but still have experienced severe flooding in the last two years.  In one of those floods, a train was derailed.  Driving was treacherous and it was not possible to get from one side of town to the other due to high water.  An emergency plan can work for anyone at any time.  We have tried to improve ours since those bad experiences.

Store The Basics

Everyone needs the same things for survival.  Water is something that can be in serious short supply at times.  Bottled water should be stored in amounts that can last for at least a few days.  Food that can be eaten without cooking should be stored as well.  First aid supplies are necessary in case of injury, and people need to know how to use them.  Copies of important papers such as birth certificates and insurance papers will be especially useful once the initial event quiets down.

Be Prepared To Evacuate

Many people have experienced problems because they were just not ready to evacuate when told.  Having supplies together in some kind of container that can be picked up and carried out quickly can save confusion and time.  When decisions can be made ahead of time, they are more likely to be sound.  Those made at the last minute in a rush may be shortsighted.  When an evacuation order is given, it is time to go.

Good Health Can Improve Survival Chances

It really is critical to do everything possible to maintain good health.  Eating right, exercising, and getting the right amount of rest can help maximize the body’s potential.  When people have to endure hardships, having preventable problems, such as some kinds of diabetes and high blood pressure, can be difficult to deal with as help may not always be readily available in emergencies.  No matter how insulated you may feel from disasters, don’t take any of it for granted.  Develop an emergency plan that can work for you and your family, and be sure everyone understands it.

Also important is being in good health to withstand the turmoil your life will be in. Don't take your health for granted, either. It may save your life.
