Your Clothing Could Be Contributing to Back Pain
By Paul Rothbart
There are many people who suffer from back pain. This common affliction can be caused by several things. Poor posture, improper lifting techniques, and lack of exercise are all primary culprits. Sitting or standing for long periods in one position can also create pain in your back. There is another possible factor that you may not be aware of. Strange as it may seem, your clothing can cause back pain. Not unusual clothing like a suit of armor, but popular everyday articles. Here are some types of clothing and why you may want to exercise some caution.
Shoes
Shoes support your feet which support your body. They can have a major impact on your back. High heels are notorious for causing back pain. Having your feet locked into a pointing position all day places stress on your ankles and calves. This stress will find its way to your lower back. This type of shoe does not provide the necessary support or having a sufficiently large sole to absorb the shock of all the steps you take. This can also cause back pain. Shoes without a back such as mules or clogs can also be harmful. There is nothing to hold your heel flat so they too lack support. You can wear these styles occasionally but be mindful of how long you do and don't wear them when you will be on your feet all day.
Clothes
Skinny jeans are a very popular style. The tightness accentuates the legs and can look stunning. Some doctors have gone on record, warning people not to wear them. Tight pants can cut off circulation in the feet and lower legs. A study conducted in 2015 uncovered the case of a 35-year-old woman whose jeans were so tight, her legs and ankles swelled to the point that she couldn't walk. Changing the way you stride to accommodate tight jeans can harm your back. Large handbags that are filled with items can be heavy enough to strain the back. Just as with shoes, be careful when choosing clothes and how often you wear them. Fashion doesn't have to hurt.
See a Chiropractor
Whether your back pain is caused by your clothing or something else, chiropractic care can be very helpful. A chiropractor can examine your spine and joints, finding subluxations or other problems and correcting them with an adjustment. Regular visits can help keep your back and joints healthy and pain-free. A chiropractor may also be able to offer advice on what clothing could be harmful.
It's nice to be fashionable and look good. But your appearance should not come at the expense of your health. Be careful when choosing clothing. You don't want to cause back pain. Consider a visit to The Joint Chiropractic. You don't need an appointment. You may find that regular chiropractic care can help keep you pain-free no matter how you dress.
